The value of curb appeal

Increase your property value with a professional landscape team

A recent study reported by the Wall Street Journal set out to quantify the value of curb appeal. They found that “on average a home with excellent curb appeal sold for 7% more than a similar house in the same neighborhood with poor curb appeal. In slow real-estate markets (when buyers can afford to be choosier), that premium rose to as high as 14%."

With an additional 7-14% up for grabs, we need to be spending more time on our landscapes.

Real estate broker and Forbes Business Council Member, Reagan Greer, explained that “so often people just focus efforts on the décor inside the house, but equal thought should be given to the current state of the yard to maximize initial appeal.” Reagan emphasized the importance of first impressions and that it’s “well worth the investment of time and money spent to ensure the appeal sticks.” Put simply, running a mower over the lawn isn’t going to cut it (no pun intended). Homeowners need to put their best foot forward with an attractive, well-manicured yard.

The most effective and convenient way to improve curb appeal is with a professional landscape company. Not only are they expert green thumbs with access to the best products and equipment, a professional will know how to get the most out of your property.

There are several ways a landscape company can increase your property value.

1. Consistent lawn care

Proper lawn care is so much more than simply firing up the mower. A landscape company will string trim around fencing and mailboxes, edge along concrete boundaries, and provide a fertilization regime to keep turf lush and green. After all, your lawn is often the first thing prospective buyers notice when they pull up to your property.

2. Making a statement

A well-manicured yard should also be free of unsightly weeds. A qualified lawn care technician can provide proactive weed management for your entire property - your lawn, garden beds, patio, and other hard surfaces. A good weed control program will also include the application of fresh mulch, which not only acts as a natural barrier against weeds, it’s also a great way to stand out.

3. Creating symmetry

Overgrown bushes, dead plants, or damaged tree limbs detract from the overall appearance of your yard. Keeping plants tidy with regular trimming and pruning, at least 3-4 times a year, will have a significant impact. Technique and timing are crucial, and an experienced hand can prevent damage to delicate buds. Skilled hands will also add appeal with well-groomed shrubs and symmetrical boxwoods.

4. Maintaining vibrant plants

Eye-catching plants are no good to you if they succumb to disease. A licensed technician can protect your investment with a pest control plan. They are experts in native pest identification and treatment and will know which insects to treat for and when.

5. Adding color and interest

An effective way to bring color and interest to your home is with seasonal plantings. A professional can help identify the right type, height, and color to complement the aesthetics of your home. A pretty display of flowers along your footpath or entryway can really elevate your exterior and capture the attention of buyers.

The final thing to be mindful of is evidence of maintenance or repair issues. The last thing a buyer wants to see is a broken mailbox or overflowing gutters. Irrigation systems and outdoor lighting should be functioning. Shabby porch furniture or décor should be removed or replaced. Hardware and shutters should be in good condition. Small improvements like a fresh coat of paint on the front door or a new set of decorative house numbers can make a big difference.

Whether you are looking to sell now or just want to make some improvements before a valuation, a landscape professional can help you attract a better price for your home.
